Spring Aquatics Training Courses
Lifeguard / CPR PR Challenges (will renew Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional and First Aid Cards)
Hours are longer due to CPR PR and Lifeguarding changes, so this will be more like a review course than a challenge. To renew lifeguarding, Red Cross guidelines state you must challenge all lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional skills, even if you have a current card. CPR for the Professional can be renewed seperately, and will be done by approximately 4 PM.
Cost is $75 for both renewals or $25 for just CPR Professional. To enroll, call the St. Joseph YWCA at 232-9099. Payment is due at time of registration. Class sizes are limited to the first six students to enroll.

Lifeguard Courses
Must be 15 years of age by the end of the course and able to pass a swimming pretest. Pretests must be completed before enrolling in the class. The pretest includes an untimed 300 yard swim of front crawl stroke and breast stroke (must swim with head in the water using rythmic breathing) and a timed test of pulling a brick from 9 ft. of water and swimming with it to simulate a rescue.
To enroll, students must schedule a pretest prior to the course with Melissa Ferguson, Aquatics Coordinator, by calling 816-232-9099 or emailing mferguson@ywcasj.org. The pretest fee is $10 and is deducted from the cost of the course upon successful completion of the pretest. Class size is limited to the first ten students to complete the pretest and register for the course. Payment is due at the time of registration.
Cost is $175 ($165 + $10 pretest fee)

Lifeguard Instructor Course
Must be 17 years of age by the end of the course and have completed Fundamentals of Instructor Training (see date below if student needs FIT course). Pretest requirements include passing a pre-course written examination with a minimum grade of 80% or better and successfully performing all skills in the lifeguarding instructor precourse session. These skills include an untimed 300 yard swim of front crawl stroke and breast stroke (must swim with head in the water using rythmic breathing) and a timed test of pulling a brick from 9 ft. of water and swimming with it to simulate a rescue. Additional skills include demonstration of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
Skills to be tested will be the new lifeguarding, CPR PR and First Aid skills as per the new materials released on 12/31/2006. Due to the release of these new requirements, Lifeguard Instructor Candidates are strongly encouraged to pretest at the February 24, March 10 or April 28 Lifeguard/CPR PR Challenges listed on this flyer.

WSI Course
Water Safety Instructor Certification is a requirement to teach Red Cross Swim lessons. Must be 16 years of age by the end of the course, completed Fundamentals of Instructor Training (see date below if student needs FIT course), and pass the precourse stroke evaluation. The precourse stroke evaluation includes demonstrating Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Level 4 ability in front crawl, back crawl, breaststoke, butterfly, sidestroke and elementary backstroke.

Lifeguard Management Course
This course is for those individuals who will be managing a swimming pool. The purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguard Management course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effictively manage lifeguards and to create an environment that keeps patrons, lifeguards, and the aquatic facility safe. The Lifeguard Management course covers the responsibilities of a lifeguard supervisor, the selection and training of lifeguards, team building, principles of injury prevention, risk management and emergency-response planning. There are no prerequisites to enroll, but it is recommended that participants possess a current lifeguarding/first aid certificate and have either lifeguarding or management experience in another occupation. Participants who participate in all activities and pass the final exam with 80% or better will be given a course completion certificate from the American Red Cross for Lifeguard Management. GuardStart
This eight session course is for 11-14 year olds who would like to develop the skills needed to take the Lifeguarding course at age 15. Students must be able to swim the front crawl for 25 yards, tread water for one minute and swim underwater for 10 feet to enroll in the class. To enroll, call the St. Joseph YWCA at 232-9099. Payment is due at time of registration. Class sizes are limited to the first ten students to enroll.
Cost is $75 + $7 book fee
Wednesday nights 5-6 PM, March 7-April 25 or June 13-August 1.
Basic Water Rescue & Home Pool Safety
This course is aimed at pubic safety personnel, aquatic fitness instructors, aquatic therapists, and home pool owners. This course will provide individuals with information and skills necessary prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. It also prepares individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. This course will also provide information for home pool owners and apartment pool users on how to keep their families and guests safe. This course DOES NOT provide participants will the information or skills needed to be certified as a lifeguard. There are no course prerequisites, but due to the in-water skills session, it is recommended that participants are comfortable in chest-deep water.
